Overview

Prof. Dr. Erkan Kaptanoğlu was born in Balikesir, Turkey in 1966. After completing his primary and secondary education in Balikesir, He graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty in 1990. He completed his Internship in Peterborough District Hospital and Lincoln County Hospital in United Kingdom for 6 months on Vascular Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics. He completed his residency program on Neurosurgery in Ankara Numune Hospital in 1997. He completed the EANS training courses, in September 1996 and He passed the European Board of Neurosurgery written exam. At the University of Toronto, Canada, Prof. Dr. Erkan Kaptanoğlu worked alongside Prof. Dr. Charles Tator, for a period of one year from 1998-1999 as a “research fellow” on “spinal cord injury and regeneration”. Prof. Dr. Erkan Kaptanoğlu achieved ‘Acibadem Hospital Medical Research Award’ on spinal cord injury in 2000. He achieved the ‘Turkish Neurosurgery Society Dr. Mahir Tevruz Scientific Research Award’, and ‘Award of TUBITAK and the Brain Research Association Wheyt in 2001. He achieved the ‘Turkish Neurosurgery Society Hamit Ziya Gokalp Young Neurosurgeons Research Award’ in 2002. Within the Turkish Neurosurgery Society, he won many other awards, such as ‘Yıldlz Yalçınlar Scientific Research Award’. His academic interests are spinal cord injury, neuroprotection, regeneration and spinal anatomical studies. In 2000-2001, Prof. Dr. Erkan Kaptanoğlu took part in the preparation for publication of the Turkish Journal of Neurosurgery. In 2001-2006 worked as an assistant editor of the Turkish Journal of Neurosurgery. He became Head of Committee of Young Neurosurgeons in 2002 for Turkish Neurosurgery Association. He was elected to the Board of the Association of Turkish Neurosurgery Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery Group for 2003-2009. He became an Associate Professor in 2004. He was promoted as Doctor of Science by completing a doctorate (PhD) in 2005, at Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences on Advanced Neurological Sciences. He took part in Human Spinal Cord Stem Cell Project with Departments of Neurosurgery and Hematology in Ankara University and Ministry of Health. He had been running a Neurosurgery Clinic, and was appointed as Deputy Chief in Ankara Numune Hospital in 2009. He was in charge of cranial, pediatric, spinal, trauma and vascular surgery operations. He started an academic colloberation with Ankara University Department of Anatomy and Hacettepe University Research Laboratories to devalop new treatment strategies in spinal cord injury and complex spinal surgeries. In 2010 he was appointed full Professor and Head of Department of Neurosurgery, School of Medicine, Near East University in Cyprus. He worked as a Founder Physician in Chief until 2015. He was elected to be President to the Association of Turkish Neurosurgery Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery Board in 2015. He organised many courses and symphosiums under Turkish neurosurgical Society, Marmara University and AO Spine. He was appointed as full Professor at the Marmara University School of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery in Istanbul, between 2015-2019. He was elected to the head of Department of Neurosurgery, at the Marmara University School of Medicine in June 2015-2018. He was also appointed to Head of Neurological Institute, Marmara University, Istanbul between 2015-2019. During his duty in Marmara University, His surgical interest was on complex spinal surgery such as deformity surgery, spinal tumor surgery, sacrum-pelvic tumor surgery and thoracoscopic spinal surgery. He has been studying on regeneration and neuroprotection of spinal cord injury since his duty in Marmara. He was elected to a Board Member Of Turkish Neurosurgical Academy in 2019. He retired from Marmara University and met the chance to open private clinic in January 2019. He has been working, operating and doing his research studies in İstanbul Brain and Spine Center (IBSC) and his Private Clinic since then. He has took part as trainer and lecturer in national and international courses and meetings. He gave more than 100 invited talks, wrote more than 100 papers, more than 50 book chapters. He is a member of Turkish Medical Association, Turkish Association of Neurosurgical Society, Turkish Spine Society, AO Spine, Eurospine, Turkish Neurosurgical Academy. Prof. Dr. Erkan Kaptanoğlu is married and a father of two daughter.
